This cup is inscribed with a passage from the Cursive Script style, echoing the personal letters of ancient Chinese scholars. It is a copy (or "study") of a work by the Jin Dynasty calligraphy master, Wang Xizhi's son, Wang Xianzhi .

The text is a poignant excerpt from his epistolary work Xuan Du He Lai Chi Tie (Why is Xuan Du Arriving Late?). The passage laments the fleeting nature of friendship and the melancholy of parting:

"An Shi stayed here for half a day, fortunate to have kept him for the night. I escorted him to the roadside, which brought forth a deep sigh. What words can describe this feeling? On the 10th (of the next month), I shall be at Puyang..."
