Calligraphy & Cultural Meaning

The cup features a reproduction of a famous running script (Caoshu) letter by the "Sage of Calligraphy," Wang Xizhi, from the Jin Dynasty:

"得示知足下猶未佳，耿耿。吾亦劣劣。明日出乃行，不欲觸霧故也。遲散。王羲之頓首。"

This text is a snapshot of ancient social etiquette and daily life. Wang Xizhi writes to his friend that he received the letter ("De Shi") but knows the friend is still not feeling well ("You Wei Jia"). He confides that he too is feeling under the weather ("Liu Liu"). He explains his plan to leave tomorrow because he does not wish to travel through the morning mist ("Chu Wu Chu Xing, Bu Yu Chu Wu Gu Ye"), signing off with respectful regards.
